GREAT OUTDOORS WEEK 2004 - DIRECTOR'S
MEMORANDUM TO FWS EMPLOYEES
To: All FWS Employees
From: Director
Subject: Great Outdoors Month - June 2005
June traditionally begins the outdoor recreational season.
Millions of Americans will enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors
and the many wonderful ways that outdoor recreation adds to
the quality of our lives. President Bush recently proclaimed
June 2005 as Great Outdoors Month.
The public lands managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,
our national wildlife refuges and fish hatcheries, provide
many opportunities for outdoor recreation. In addition to
promoting a healthier lifestyle, these outdoor activities
help promote conservation awareness in our visitors.
This year's Great Outdoors Month will feature many activities,
including those as part of National Boating and Fishing Week,
National Trails Day, and National Clean Beaches Week. National
wildlife refuges and fish hatcheries across the United States
will be hosting many events during the month. For example,
The Leavenworth National Fish Hatchery in Washington is hosting
a Kids All American Fishing Derby, the A.R.M. Loxahatchee
National Wildlife Refuge in Florida is hosting a Kid's Fishing
Day, and the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge
in Texas is hosting a Hiking for Health and Harmony event.
The above examples are just a few of the many Great Outdoors
Month activities that will be taking place on refuges and
hatcheries. You can find a national list of planned events
at http://www.greatoutdoorsmonth.org. The Service encourages
each of you and your families to take time to enjoy the many
outdoor recreation opportunities that are available to all
of us.
